Don't Mess With Texas: My Trip to Dallas

Funny thing is, I’ve always wanted to live in Texas. I know what you're probably thinking—A San Diego girl dreaming of the country? But it’s true! I’ve always loved that country/southern lifestyle. The open space, big homes, friendly people, farms, and of course… the food. Texas barbecue? Say less.

So when my aunt invited me to tag along on her work trip to Dallas, I didn’t hesitate. She knew I’d always wanted to visit, and she didn’t want to go alone. A total win-win. The hotel was already covered by her job, so all I had to do was buy my flight. Done deal.

Solo Exploring in Grapevine

Since my aunt was busy during the day with work, I had a lot of solo time to explore. First stop? Grapevine Mills Mall. That place is huge—I literally got lost, but eventually found my way around. I told myself I wasn’t going to buy anything… but yeah, that didn’t last long. I ended up at the Michael Kors outlet where everything was 70% off. I walked out with a purse and wallet for $109. Steal.

Down the way, I walked into Robert Wayne and found a pair of Birkenstocks. To be honest, I never liked them—until I tried them on. Game changer. The guy helping me out was super nice (maybe even flirting a little?) and gave me 15% off. I wasn't mad about that.

Texas-Sized Dinner

That night, my aunt and I went to Texas Roadhouse for dinner—finally! My dad and aunt have always talked about how good the food is, especially the bread. I ordered Country Fried Chicken, a side of tater skins, and lemon water. If you’ve never had tater skins, you’re missing out—potato skins loaded with cheese and bacon? Yes, please. The food was amazing, but I couldn’t finish it all. My tiny body was tapped out. We wrapped up the night reading in the hotel room—chill and cozy.

Museums, A New Friend, and Deep Ellum

The next morning, I set out to explore downtown Dallas. First stop: the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum. I’m a total history nerd—especially when it comes to the Holocaust era. That museum was powerful. Seeing real artifacts from that time gave me chills. It was a sobering reminder of how real evil can be. One of the most unforgettable parts? Hearing a Holocaust survivor share her story. I had goosebumps the entire time.

Afterward, I planned to visit the Dallas Museum of Art. While standing outside, I asked a girl for directions. Turns out she was heading there too and offered me a ride. I hesitated at first (stranger danger, right?), but we clicked instantly during our convo, so I trusted my gut. We ended up exploring the entire museum together, chatting like we’d known each other forever.

She even took me to Deep Ellum, which she called the “North Park of San Diego.” We toured downtown Dallas, swapped life stories, and just vibed. Honestly, meeting her was one of the highlights of my trip. Life really does bring the best surprises when you least expect them.

Baseball, Barbecue, and Big Dreams

That night, my aunt and I went to a Texas Rangers game—because baseball is life. Whether it’s MLB, college ball, travel teams, or Little League, I’m there. One of my bucket list goals is to visit every MLB stadium (with a game, of course). Rangers Stadium was nice... but sorry, still not as good as Petco Park.  Great food, great game, great company—it doesn’t get better than that.

House Goals

Before leaving, I drove through some neighborhoods just to get a feel for the housing market. Let me tell you—WOW. The homes are huge, beautiful, and half the price of what you’d find in California. The southern charm is real, and I could 100% see myself living there one day.

Final Thoughts

My trip to Dallas was everything I hoped for and more. From shopping and museums to unexpected friendships and unforgettable meals, I soaked it all in. Texas, you’ve got my heart.

Seriously, y’all…
DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS.
